Narrative:

Firefighters responded to a picnic shelter at Belmar Hills Park Friday night to find an orange glow visible in the darkness. A group of about 10 people were seen in the shelter. About half of them dispersed as soon as Engine Company 7 approached.

Firefighters found embers of a cardboard box labeled as fireworks glowing on the shelter floor but there was no active fire at the time. Fresh ashes on a nearby picnic table indicated to firefighters that the box had recently been burning there. When asked what went on, none of the remaining individuals on scene were willing to explain what occurred, and some claimed they were not around when the fire broke out. No other bystanders were around to assist in the investigation.

Firefighters put out the remaining embers, and the cardboard was discarded. There were no injuries and no damage to the park property.
