Address:
500 block State Street
Madison, WI 53703
Narrative:

Firefighters paid an unexpected visit to a State Street resident Sunday morning after a witness reported seeing two-foot flames coming out the top of an unattended grill on a balcony.

Engine Company 1 responded to the area, detecting the aroma of grilled food in the air but initially unable to find the grill. Firefighters received more information from the 911 caller before ultimately locating the grill on a balcony above 556 State Street. The grill was still smoking, and by this time the occupant had returned to the grill.

Firefighters met with the man to familiarize him with the City’s burning rules. They also instructed him not to leave grills unattended, and never to use a grill on a balcony because of the great risk it poses to the building and its occupants. He stated that he was done for the day and would not do it again.
