Two calls pertaining to improper grill use prompts a reminder from Madison firefighters to understand the rules when it comes to grilling on balconies.

Engine Company 13 responded to East Hill Parkway Friday night after a concerned neighbor reported a grill on a balcony creating large flames and smoke. There were no apparent issues when firefighters arrived to the building, but there were hot coals still inside the grill on the deck. The tenants were asked to close the air grates on the grill and pour water on the coals to cool it down.

Saturday afternoon, firefighters were dispatched to the 2400 block of Independence Lane, where people were cooking with a small charcoal grill on a second-story balcony. The occupants were informed that they need to be grilling at least 10 feet away from the building, away from all combustibles.

Unless a balcony is protected by automatic fire sprinklers, grilling on the balcony is not allowed. Rules vary depending on the type of grill being used. Read our Grill Guidelines to learn more.
