Narrative:

A stove-top burner ignited food and a plastic container after the occupant turns on burner.

At 4:15 PM on Monday, firefighters were called to the 6700 block of Schroeder Road for a report of a cooking fire. Crews arrived five minutes later, finding residents had evacuated the apartment complex and directed Firefighters to the fire. Firefighters went to the second floor and encountered heavily hanging smoke and extinguishing agent dust. Crews ventilated the apartment by using fans and opening windows.

It was found that the occupant turned on the wrong stove burner after they placed a plastic colander filled with fried chicken on top of the stove. There was nothing under the colander to catch the drippings. The occupant stepped away from the stove when one of the children in the apartment drew her attention to the fire. The occupant then retrieved a fire extinguisher from the hallway and extinguished the fire.

Firefighters checked for extension and found none. There was minimal damage to the appliance, but cleanup of the extinguishing agent would have to occur before the occupants could return to the apartment.

No injuries to report as a result of the fire.
