Arrival:
Wednesday, February 21, 2018 - 6:02pm
Address:
1300 block Rutledge
Madison, WI
Narrative:

Firefighters responded to an east side apartment complex to check out an odor of natural gas coming from one of the apartments. Upon arrival, Engine Company 3 did detect a smell of mercaptan, the gas that gives natural gas its detectable “rotten egg” smell.

Finding no readings of natural gas in the entryway of the building, firefighters proceeded into the apartment in question and started to pick up readings on their handheld air monitors. They narrowed the problem down to the oven/stove. The appliance was pulled away from the wall and the gas line was turned off to put a stop to the leak.

Firefighters opened windows to clear the air and advised the occupant to contact her landlord for repair or replacement of the oven before it’s used again. The apartment was still safe to occupy.
