Narrative:

A fire alarm activation at a downtown retail store led firefighters to discover a problem brewing in the electrical room.

Engine Company 1 was dispatched to UW Bookstore on Library Mall at 10:11 p.m. Thursday. Firefighters were met by staff who were unaware what had set off the alarm. The alarm panel indicated the problem was in the bookstore offices, leading the crew to investigate the area.

There were no obvious signs of smoke or fire. During a search of the basement, staff reported a “funny smell.” That’s where Engine 1 discovered steam in the ceiling, the source of which appeared to be a nearby room with a closed door labeled “Electrical Hazard: Danger.”

The door handle was found to be hot, and MGE was immediately notified to respond. Firefighters awaited their response before proceeding.

With MGE on scene, the door was opened, revealing that approximately eight inches of water had accumulated on the floor of the electrical room. MGE assured firefighters and UW Bookstore staff that there was no immediate electrical hazard. UW steam fitters were notified of the situation, and they promptly responded to mitigate the leak.

The scene was left in the care of UW staff, who were advised to call 911 immediately if there was any need.
