Smoke Fills Downtown Apartment, Hallway; Burning Of Sandalwood To Blame
Madison, WI 53703
The Madison Fire Department responded to the 600 block of W. Doty Street after a resident reported smoke in the hallway and the sound of smoke alarms.
Engine Company 1 was already on scene at the Main Street side of the building when Ladder Company 1 and a full structure fire complement were dispatched to join them. Engine 1 went up to the fourth floor, where the smoke was reported to be, and went door to door to try to find the source.
Firefighters ultimately located a resident who had burned some sandalwood in a container for its pleasant odor. They used too much, however, and it caused smoke to fill the apartment and spill into the hallway. Windows had already been opened to clear the air.
Engine 1 reset the fire alarm, and all companies returned to service.
