Address:
100 block S. Hamilton
Madison, WI 53703
Narrative:

A 911 call from a neighbor reporting a fire alarm sounding in his downtown building led firefighters to discover a fire in one of the apartments.

Engine Company 1 responded to the 100 block of S. Hamilton Street to investigate the alarm. They were met outside by a resident saying there was a smoke alarm going off and he thought he could smell smoke. Firefighters obtained a building key from an exterior key vault and found the apartment in question charged with white smoke.

Inside, one occupant was asleep next to the couch, which was on fire.

Engine Company 1 woke up the occupant and escorted her out to a stairwell before quickly extinguishing the fire. Paramedics evaluated the occupant, and she was transported to the hospital with minor injuries related to the fire.

Fire damage was contained to the couch and did not spread to nearby walls or other objects. The apartment sustained minor smoke damage.

Ladder Company 1 assisted with ventilation, and windows were opened to help clear the air. Firefighters found smoking materials on the couch and on the floor surrounding the couch.

Thanks to the early reporting of the active smoke alarm, firefighters had the situation under control before greater harm could occur.
