A 911 caller reported a fire inside the dryer at a north-side residential complex Friday afternoon.

Medic 10 arrived on scene and found heavy smoke in the basement which had spread to the first floor. Engine Company 10 stretched a hose line down to the basement, where the dryer was located, and put out the fire. There were no occupants inside.

As Ladder Company 8 ventilated, Medic 10 disconnected the dryer and Engine 10 started examining the contents. They found a throw rug with rubber backing inside the dryer, which they believe is what started on fire. The fire caused damage to plastic components inside the appliance.

One person is displaced until the smoke damage can be cleaned up.
