Address:
Goldenrod Lane
Madison, WI 53719
Update:

This fire has been ruled accidental in nature due to an electrical fault in the wiring situated in the attic space. On the morning of December 13, 2017, Ladder Company 7 arrived to this address to find smoke showing from the eaves of the building. Firefighters went to the second floor, where they were directed to a scuttle hole that would provide access to the attic. Two firefighters from Engine Company 7 then entered the attic and extinguished all remaining hot spots following the initial fire attack provided by the maintenance workers using fire extinguishers. No one was home at the time of the fire. --PIO Cynthia Schuster

Narrative:

Three people are displaced following an attic fire at a west-side apartment complex. Nobody was injured.

Firefighters were called to Goldenrod Lane after maintenance workers smelled something burning in the attic. While a property manager placed the 911 call, two maintenance workers grabbed multiple fire extinguishers and found flames spreading along the attic. They were able to attack most of the fire until Ladder Company 7, Engine Company 7, and other crews arrived to complete extinguishment.

The apartment unit directly below the fire suffered damage, and three occupants are displaced. Property managers arranged to find them a hotel until they can return home.

Damage is estimated at $15,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

This fire came at a time when MFD crews were responding to another structure fire on the east side, putting a temporary strain on resources. Thanks to efficient responses from all companies, along with swift and careful coordination by the Dane County Public Safety Communications Center, both incidents were fully staffed and resolved within moments of MFD’s arrival.
