Arrival:
Saturday, July 8, 2017 - 4:25pm
Address:
200 block Nautilus Drive
Madison, WI 53705
Narrative:

A garbage truck struck a power line on Nautilus Drive Saturday as it was lifting dumpster in the air, causing the truck to be tangled in live wires. Nobody was injured.

Ladder 2 found the Waste Management truck still in contact with the wires and smoke coming from the rear trash container area. The live wires were feeding electricity to a nearby apartment complex. Firefighters initiated a precautionary evacuation of 225 and 229 Nautilus Drive.

An ambulance and additional engine company were sent to the scene due to the extent of hazards. A captain was also dispatched to serve as incident commander as firefighters concentrated on hazard mitigation. MGE came to assist with cutting off electrical services to the power line.

Once power was eliminated, firefighters could begin extinguishing the fire. MGE had power shut down at 5:08 p.m. Ladder 2 and Engine 7 climbed roof ladders to access the hopper area and extinguished fire using water and foam. The fire was knocked down at 5:32 p.m.

Ladder 2 awaited a wrecker to remove the garbage truck. MGE remained on scene to conduct repairs and restore power to the area.
