Arrival:
Thursday, September 22, 2016 - 1:13pm
Address:
600 block N. Segoe Road
Madison, WI
Narrative:

Firefighters were called to Segoe Gardens Assisted Living Thursday afternoon after someone reported seeing smoke in a hallway. Though original reports stated the smoke was at 602 N. Segoe Road, Engine Company 9 quickly realized the emergency was actually at 606 N. Segoe Road, and the two properties are connected by a common hallway.

Firefighters found a light smoke haze in the entryway but no alarms were sounding. A maintenance worker met up with the crew and helped them locate the source. Together they discovered that kitchen staff had been grilling brats in the downstairs kitchen and the kitchen vent wasn’t working properly. Additionally, there was a power outage in the area that caused lights to flicker on and off-- and ultimately affected the kitchen appliances.

Once power returned to the building, the kitchen’s exhaust fan started up again and the haze finally dissipated.
