Address:
10 block N. Bassett Street
Madison, WI
Narrative:

A heating and air conditioning contractor was working on the outside of a Bassett Street building Wednesday when he says part of the building started on fire. He applied an entire dry chemical extinguisher to the fire and then called 911.

Ladder 1 and other MFD companies arrived moments later to investigate. They met with the contractor, who said he was soldering two small copper pipes when he noticed some smoke and a small flames come from the soffit and fascia board directly above where he was soldering.

Because there was a hole in the wall where the fire occurred, firefighters overhauled the area, tearing off the fascia, soffit board, and most of the insulation where the fire originated to make sure it hadn’t spread. Meanwhile, Engine Company 1 went inside to look for fire extension to the interior of the structure.

Some fascia board was found to be charred and smoldering. Firefighters sprayed it down to fully extinguish it and then pulled away more materials to inspect the joist spaces on either side of the charring.

At that point, no other charring and smoldering was found, and a thermal imaging camera indicated there were no elevated temperatures remaining.

Firefighters left the scene at 12:16 p.m.
