I strongly support the effort to require universal background checks. With the rise of the internet, what was once labeled a "loophole" has threatened to make background checks simply voluntary. As we witnessed so tragically in Brookfield, an individual who is legally barred from possessing a gun can now obtain one in as little as one day through a private sale. This type of "optional" security caters to criminals, and carries almost no support from responsible gun owners. It is simply illogical.

I applaud Representatives Berceau and Richards, and Senator Harris for their efforts to bring common sense to our gun laws.

Representatives Berceau and Richards, and Senator Harris introduced their bill today at a Capitol press conference.
