Rimrock Road was closed for about 45 minutes this morning while Madison Gas & Electric workers managed a natural gas leak from a breached gas main.

City of Madison firefighters were called to 2201 Rimrock after employees at a nearby business called 911 to report a strong odor of natural gas. MGE recorded a high level of natural gas at that location and traced the source to an underground gas main.

The road was closed to prevent ignition of the vapors by passing cars. No buildings were evacuated.

MGE personnel shut off the gas in the area of the leak, and were working to repair the break as the road was reopened to traffic. No businesses were disrupted, as the only building served by the gas line is currently unoccupied.

There was no word on what caused the leak to occur.
