Over the past month shots have rung out in several Madison neighborhoods. The gunfire has injured three, and Police Chief Noble Wray says it is fortunate no one has been killed.

The Madison Police Department (MPD) has two major concerns: the volume of rounds that have been fired, and the hour some shootings have occurred. In a couple of cases children - and other innocent citizens - have been nearby as bullets flew.

These types of shootings are not common in Madison, and quelling the violence is a high priority for the MPD.

On Monday afternoon, June 8th, at 2:00 p.m., there will be a news conference to discuss the shootings. It will be held at Hammersley Park, 6114 Hammersley Road (near the intersection of Hammersley and Loreen Drive).

Media will be given the latest information on:

• Where shootings have occurred.
• What the MPD response has been.
• What types of weapons have been seized.

Chief Wray, and other MPD staff, will also talk about why strong community partnerships are critical in this quest to make neighborhoods safer from gunfire.
