Metro Transit is proud to announce that it is has been recognized as the best transit system of its size in North America by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA).

In October, Metro will be presented with APTA's 2012 Outstanding Public Transportation System Achievement Award at its annual membership meeting held this year in Seattle, Washington.

APTA will present this award to three systems in North America that have demonstrated outstanding achievement in efficiency and effectiveness over the previous three-year period. Metro will receive the award in the division that provides more than 4 million but less than 20 million passenger trips annually.

Called the "best of the best" in the industry, APTA recognizes its winners as outstanding role models of excellence, leadership, and innovation whose accomplishments have greatly advanced public transportation.

"We are very excited to receive this award. We feel Metro Transit is a high quality transit system, and we appreciate the significant role the entire community plays in ensuring its success," said Metro Transit General Manager Chuck Kamp. "We could not have experienced this record breaking ridership or provided such a high level of service without the hard work of our employees and continued support from our passengers, elected officials, and taxpayers. We are fortunate that our community has a culture that stands behind transit."

In its application, Metro cited its record ridership in 2011, improved fuel economy due to the addition of 19 hybrid buses to its fleet, as well as improvements in online trip planning and implementation of live bus arrival information using smart phone technology.

Additionally, Metro was recognized for its implementation of both a small business and a low income bus program, the installation of surveillance technology on buses and transfer points, its cooperative initiatives with the Madison School District, the continuation of green initiatives through the use of Green power and participation in local environmental sustainability events, the reduction in printing costs due to electronic communication efforts, and its improvements and expansion in employee training programs.

"Metro Transit is top-notch, with incredible service and dedicated staff. It is a true asset to the City and it is wonderful to see that it is being recognized on a national level," said Madison Mayor Paul Soglin. "As families and businesses consider possible relocation, public transportation is key, not only for commuters, but also for students and families. Metro service is clearly a selling point as we attract new residents and business."

Metro would like to extend its appreciation to all passengers, employees, and other community members that have contributed to this accomplishment and invite everyone to join in celebrating this recognition throughout the summer.

In July, Metro will hold customer appreciation events including refreshments, prize drawings, and promotion item giveaways at transfer points and the Capitol Square.

Complete details on upcoming events and celebrations will be available this summer on Metro buses and posted at:
