Madison Mayor Paul Soglin announced today that the property known as Union Corners and owned by the City of Madison is now available for private development. The 11.4 acre property is comprised of three parcels (2340, 2504, and 2507 Winnebago Street) and is located at the intersection of East Washington Avenue and Milwaukee Street. At the direction of the Mayor and Common Council, the Department of Planning and Community and Economic Development has issued a Request for Proposals to solicit interest from prospective developers.

"Union Corners could be the most exciting development site in the City of Madison," Mayor Soglin said. "It's a site rich with history and offers both commercial and residential potential. It's an opportunity to craft several blocks and create a vibrant, new, urban space."

Union Corners has been a home to members of the Ho-Chunk Nation, a gathering spot for Union Soldiers after training at Madison's Camp Randall before they shipped off to serve in the Civil War, and a site of innovation and manufacturing for the French Battery company, a precursor to Rayovac. The city acquired the property in 2010 after a proposed development failed during the 2008 recession.

"It's a large, clean, pad-ready site with excellent visibility, great neighborhoods, and strong transportation connections," Steve Cover, Director of Planning and Community and Economic Development, said. "We're ready to roll up our sleeves and work with interested parties to breathe new life into this vital corner."
