Mayor Dave Cieslewicz had his home's energy efficiency evaluated as part of a program sponsored by Focus on Energy, designed to identify a home's energy efficiency problems and recommend solutions that can save consumers money on their energy bills.

"During these tough economic times, and given rising energy costs, residents need to look at ways of saving money," said Mayor Dave Cieslewicz. "Having your home's energy efficiency evaluated and improved is great way to save money. It is good for your checkbook, and at the same time good for the environment."

Under the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program, home owners first schedule a comprehensive home evaluation with a consultant certified by Focus on Energy as having been trained to use state-of-the-art equipment to test homes, identify problems and recommend solutions. The evaluation includes testing and measuring the house for air leaks, inspecting insulation levels, mechanical systems, exhaust fan ventilation, identifying sources of excessive moisture and evaluating safety issues like combustion appliance venting and carbon monoxide levels.

Following the evaluation, the home owner receives a list of home improvement recommendations, as well as a list of partnering contractors who will do the work consistent with the programs' standards. At the end of the project, the consultant will return to retest the house and verify the work was completed correctly, rectifying any problems. The program offers technical expertise, as well as Cash-Back Rewards and financing options to consumers who improve the energy efficiency of their homes.

The stimulus package currently under consideration in Congress includes an Energy Efficiency Block Grant program. Madison may be eligible for up to $2.5 million under this program which could assist residents participating in the Home Performance program.
