City of Madison fire investigators believe a fire at 1913 E. Washington yesterday afternoon started in the kitchen, but was not the result of a cooking fire.

The fire was called in just after 4 p.m. by neighbors who saw smoke coming from the side windows.

Engine Company 3 was first on scene and extinguished the fire within minutes of their arrival.

The fire was contained to the second-floor apartment at the rear of the building.

Outbound East Washington was closed for approximately 45 minutes while firefighters worked to ensure the fire was out, and that there was no extension.

No one was in the upstairs apartment at the time of the fire, but neighbors downstairs heard smoke alarms go off and were alerted to leave the building. There were no injuries.

The exact cause of the fire is undetermined.
