A ribbon cutting ceremony will celebrate the opening of the new storm shelter and playground at Highland Manor Park, 10 Manor Drive. Mayor Soglin, Parks Superintendent Eric Knepp, Alder Sheri Carter along with Highland Manor staff and community will officially open the storm shelter on Friday, August 7 at 11:00 am.

This unique 6,400 square foot shelter will serve the residents of the mobile home community with a much needed “safe room” during high wind and weather-related events, as well as provide a reservable shelter for the entire Madison area.
 
“This facility not only provides a safe haven for Highland Manor residents in a storm but also a neighborhood gathering space,” said Mayor Soglin.   “The partnership between the City, the federal government through FEMA, and the neighborhood has been marvelous and I couldn’t be more pleased that this facility is complete and operational.”
 
Alder Sheri Carter agrees, “The collaboration between all entities in bringing this shelter from concept to reality is a testament of recognizing a need and providing a solution.”
 
The adjacent park also includes a new playground and half basketball court. Total project cost is $1,662,000 with nearly $1.2 million from FEMA, applied to the costs of the storm shelter.
