This year's extremely dry conditions make fireworks safety even more important than in the past. Please follow this safety information to prevent any fireworks related fires and injuries.

The Madison Fire Department reminds the public that most fireworks are illegal within the City of Madison. Under City of Madison ordinances only sparklers, snakes, snaps, caps and party poppers are legal within the City limits. Many communities bordering Madison have differing ordinances governing the use of fireworks, but Roman candles, fountains, bottle rockets, firecrackers, and other devices sold at nearby roadside stands are not permitted within the City.

Individuals found to be using fireworks in violation of City ordinances face fines in excess of $300.

Although permitted by city ordinance, sparklers and snakes still present a fire and burn hazard. Please use these devices with caution. Only light them on a non-combustible surface like concrete. Dispose of them in a bucket of water and make sure they are completely cool before throwing in the trash.

Fireworks Safety Tips:
o Do not use consumer fireworks.
o The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public display conducted by trained professionals.
o After the fireworks display, children should never pick up fireworks that may be left over, they may still be active.
o The tip of a sparkler burns at a temperature of more than 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, which is hot enough to cause third-degree burns.
