Madison Firefighters handled two rescue calls within one hour this morning. The first call occurred at a recyclable material recovery facility operated by Pelliterri Waste Systems in the southeast corner of the city.

Units were sent to Kipp Street at 9:31 a.m. for a report of a worker trapped under a large pile of paper near a baling machine. Fellow employees and firefighters were able to quickly uncover the worker. Paramedics transported the employee to UW Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

As firefighters were leaving this incident, a call was received at 10:09 a.m. for a two vehicle crash on John Nolen Drive at Lake Shore Drive. The crash involved a car and a small pickup truck. When firefighters arrived on scene they found the pickup on its side in the roadway with the driver in the cab. Firefighters stabilized the truck so it would not move or tip over and then helped the driver out of the cab. The driver of the car was already out of the vehicle when crews arrived. Paramedics treated and transported both drivers to the hospital.

City of Madison firefighters and paramedics train with a variety of tools and equipment for many types of rescue situations. Any emergency requiring technical rescue techniques or equipment will initiate the response of the Department's Heavy Urban Rescue Team (HURT). This team, comprised of 76 members, is trained and equipped to respond to a variety of emergencies that include, but are not limited to:
• Confined space rescue
• High/low angle rope rescue
• Trench collapse rescue
• Building collapse rescue
