The City of Madison and Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) have scheduled the reconstruction of East Johnson Street from N. Butler Street to N. Baldwin Street to begin during the week of May 5, 2014.  WisDOT has awarded the contract to R. G. Huston Company, of Cottage Grove WI.  The project will consist of new asphalt pavement, concrete curb & gutter, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water main, traffic signals, street lights and driveway aprons.  Sidewalk will be replaced as needed to repair any damaged sections and as necessary to install sanitary sewer laterals.  Construction is expected to continue for approximately 6 months.

Only one lane of traffic will be maintained through the construction zone at peak traffic times.  Significant traffic delays have already occurred at peak times when two lanes of traffic have been maintained. With one lane, severe traffic delays are expected during peak traffic times.  During non-peak hours some delay can be expected as well.  A signed, alternate route for Johnson Street utilizes Bassett Street, West Washington Avenue, the Outer Loop, and East Washington Avenue. Motorists are strongly encouraged to use alternative modes of transportation during this summer’s construction.

Metro Transit will have several routes detoured and limited stops on East Johnson Street.  Those route changes can be found on the Metro Transit Detours webpage: http://www.cityofmadison.com/metro/detours/

All businesses in the area will remain open, and pedestrian access will be maintained to all businesses. Please continue to support these local businesses during the construction project.

Updates regarding construction will be posted throughout the construction season.  The link to the project website is:   http://www.cityofmadison.com/engineering/EJohnson/.

The City of Madison Traffic Engineering Division is also providing traffic cameras online.  These can be found at the following link https://cameras.cityofmadison.com .  Motorists may be able to avoid the most congested periods by altering the times that they travel.
