Council President Sheri Carter and Council Vice-President Syed Abbas statement on the passing of Anisa Scott:

“Today we come before you, with our colleagues on the Common Council, and the entire City of Madison, mourning the passing of an innocent child, Anisa Scott, a casualty of the senseless violence we have been experiencing in the City lately.  Our hearts grieve deeply for her family and all those impacted by this loss and others in recent weeks.

We will not forget Anisa and we are sure we speak for all our colleagues when we say that we will ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

As stated yesterday, Council President Carter is aware of the challenges and disparities that come with being Black in America and specifically in Madison. However, we will make no excuses for those who make the choice to go out and take another human life.  To honor the spirit of Anisa, we urge everyone, especially those in the African American community to work with us and the City to root out all those who are determined to ruin our community and prevent us from a healthy and safe way of life.

Again, our prayers go out to the family of Anisa Scott. May she rest in peace and never be forgotten.”
