In June 2021, the Streets Division began a new system for collecting large items. In the new system, residents are asked to schedule their large item pickups in advance.

The August Moving Days, however, present a unique challenge with roughly 20,000 people all moving at the same time. That’s equivalent to the entire population of the City of Middleton all moving at the exact same time.

For residents in the student move-out student move-out area during the August moving days, here’s how you should use the large item system during the move out.

Use the Work Order System for Items That Require a Fee (Televisions, Microwaves, Etc.)
If you live in the student move-out area, you should use the new large item work order system to pay for the items that require a fee.

Fees can also be paid over the phone, or in-person by visiting the Streets Division offices.

The items include microwaves, air conditioners, televisions, and other items. Check the Streets Division’s website for a full list of items that require a fee.

Curbside Pickup for Items that Require a Fee
If you would like the item picked up from the curb, choose one of the set-out date options available to you.

You will not receive a fee sticker in the mail.

Crews will know which items have had their fees paid by completing the online form and choosing your set-out date.

Drop-off Site for Items Requiring a Fee
Certain items, like televisions and computers, should not be placed at the curb for pickup and can only be taken to the drop-off sites.

If you would like to take the item to a drop-off site instead, you will be mailed a fee sticker to the valid City of Madison address you entered into the work order form.

You must to wait to until you receive the fee stickers before you can take them item that requires a fee to the site.

Staff that work in the drop-off sites cannot sell stickers. If you plan on visiting the site on a Saturday or after hours with an item that requires a fee, plan ahead on how to purchase the stickers you need for the items you have.

Furniture, Mattresses, and Other Items That Do Not Have a Fee
If are in the student move out area during the move out days, you will not need to use the work order form for items that are collected at no additional cost. This includes furniture, mattresses, tables, rugs, and many other items.

Crews will be regularly roaming through the student move out area during moving days collecting items.

Considering the scope of this yearly move-out this is the best way crews to keep pace with the material set out for crews to collect.

If you are bringing items to a drop-off site that are free, you do not need to fill out a work order form either. This is the standard procedure for using our drop-off sites.
