City of Madison firefighters were assigned to keep watch at 5 Odana Ct. all day yesterday and overnight as the remains of the building continued to smolder and occasionally flare up.

Insurers for the building brought in heavy equipment this morning to dig into areas that were reigniting, allowing firefighters to douse the last of the fire.

Dense paper files kept the fire going after portions of the building collapsed on top of them.Late this morning, workers from 4C - Community Coordinated Child Care, and Lutheran Social Services waited outside a temporary fence as firefighters made their way through the rubble to salvage the files.

Applause broke out when some file drawers emerged intact.The current damage estimate from yesterday's fire is $3 million.

Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire, but are focusing their attention on the top floor near the center of the building. They have found no evidence to suggest the fire was intentionally set.
