The City of Madison Fire Department's newest fire station - #12, will be named for the Department's former Medical Director, Dr. Darren Bean. Dr. Bean was killed in a Med Flight crash last May.

Fire Chief Debra Amesqua made the announcement at a groundbreaking ceremony on the site of the new station yesterday.

"We are deeply gratified to have this opportunity to honor the memory of Dr. Darren Bean in such a meaningful and lasting way," said Chief Amesqua.

Darren was a passionate advocate for the availability and accessibility of emergency services. This station will be an enormous help in providing service to our growing community and we believe it is a fitting tribute to his memory."

The location for the new fire house is 400 South Point Rd, just south of West Mineral Point Road. The long-awaited west side fire station is expected to greatly improve response times in a growing area of the City.

"We are grateful for this opportunity to extend our reach to an area of the City that continues to grow in population," said Fire Chief Debra Amesqua. "We pledge our continued commitment to careful management of resources, while maintaining the high level of service our community expects and deserves."

Construction of the new fire station is based on principles of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®), meeting the standard of LEED certificaton.LEED provides rating systems that are voluntary, consensus-based, market-driven, and based on accepted energy and environmental principles. The rating systems are designed to strike a balance between established practices and emerging concepts.

The new station is scheduled to be in operation by July, 2009.
