National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week is May 17-23. It coincides with the beginning of duties for the City's nine newest paramedics.

The paramedics graduated from their studies on April 8. Following graduation they completed a series of requirements set by the state of Wisconsin for licensing and certification.

The new paramedics are David Crossen, Eric Fredrickson, Pat Howe, Chris Hubert, Karla Kalepp, Eric Mills, Kevin McDonald, Jeff Vogen, and Eric Winker. All have been with the Department as firefighter/EMT's.

They began their paramedic training in September, 2008.

EMS is a growing segment of the fire service, making up about 80% of the Department's calls. City of Madison paramedics responded to more than 21,000 EMS calls in 2008.

The Department operates seven Advanced Life Support ambulances. An 8th ambulance is scheduled to begin operation in 2010.

EMS Week brings together local communities and medical personnel to publicize safety and honor the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of medicine's "front line." This year's theme is A Proud Partner in Your Community. The recognition is sponsored by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).
