The City of Madison Fire Department is going out of business - at least when it comes to sales of weather radios. Since April, the Department has conducted two citywide sales at its 11 fire stations, putting programmable weather radios into nearly 5,000 households.
Aided by area meteorologists, residents have become more familiar with the importance of an early warning system in the home.
The radios proved to be so popular that long lines were common during the sales. The first sale in April sold almost 1,500 radios in under 30 minutes, prompting the Department to order another 3,000 for a second sale last weekend.
Most of those are now gone as well. The Department has 250 radios left and residents who missed the weekend sales are encouraged to pick up their radios at Fire Administration offices, located at 325 W. Johnson St.
Sales are limited to two (2) radios per customer. The cost is $22.68 per radio. No cash or credit will be accepted. Checks or money orders are required for the purchase.
