Narrative:

An automatic fire sprinkler system on the 5th floor of the YWCA helped avoid major damage from a fire Wednesday.

Engine 1 responded to a fire alarm at 1:18 p.m. thanks to a prompt call to 911. They were met outside by staff and patrons stating there was a fire on the 5th floor. Command immediately made it a full fire response. The firefighters rapidly initiated high-rise fire fighting operations.

Heavy smoke conditions were reported on the 4th and 5th floors. Crews quickly located the origin of the fire that was being held at bay by the sprinkler system. They successfully extinguished the fire, keeping the water and fire damage to a minimum.

YWCA staff followed all proper procedures when fire alarms were activated. All residents were evacuated safely, and nobody was injured.

The YWCA has been retrofitted with an automatic sprinkler system, which prevented major damage from occurring.  There were no injuries to firefighters. Damage is estimated at $5,000-$10,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
