The MFD Fire Investigation Team has concluded its investigation into the fire that took place on Seminole Highway on Thursday, June 4, 2020. Investigators determined the fire started in the screened-in porch area at the rear of the house. Investigators have narrowed down two potential causes of the fire: A possible electrical fault in the screened-in porch area and/or improperly discarded smoking materials. The fire was unintentional.

The investigation into this fire is ongoing; however, investigators have determined the fire was not intentional. The MFD Fire Investigation Team continues to examine a number of potential causes, and this report will be updated when more information becomes available.

The Madison Fire Department is investigating a fire that claimed two lives and sent another two to the hospital overnight.

Crews were dispatched to a home on Seminole Highway after Dane County 911 Public Safety Communications received calls reporting heavy fire. Upon arrival, Ladder Co. 6 confirmed a heavy amount of fire showing from the back of the home. Two occupants who had escaped the fire reported two additional people were still trapped inside. As Ladder Co. 6 quickly began fire attack, Ladder Co. 7 and Medic 6 assisted with search and rescue. Within ten minutes of arrival on scene, firefighters located the two people trapped inside; both were deceased.

The identities of the deceased and manners of death are determined by the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office. The Madison Fire Department will not be releasing this information.

The two individuals who escaped the fire were evaluated by MFD paramedics but chose to transport themselves to a local hospital for further evaluation and medical care.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time.
