TV Breakdown Sends Firefighters To West-Side Duplex
Madison, WI
An Elderberry Road resident was watching television Tuesday night when the TV suddenly went out and a strong odor of smoke filled the room. Concerned about a possible electrical fire brewing, she called 911.
A full structure fire response was summoned, and Engine Company 12 arrived first on scene. The occupant met firefighters outside and explained what happened. She mentioned she turned off the breakers on her electrical panel, though none of them tripped in their own.
Firefighters smelled a strong odor around the HDTV and noted smoke throughout the duplex, but there seemed to be no fire. A second crew came in with "a fresh set of noses” and also confirmed the odor was centered around the television.
The TV was moved to an outdoor porch. Firefighters did some ventilation, but due to the cold, the occupant said she’d rather cope with the leftover smell. Breakers were turned back on, and firefighters left the home at 7:53 p.m.
