Address:
Sherman Ave. at Northport Dr.
Madison, WI
Narrative:

A two-vehicle crash involving a sedan and a pool chemical supply truck on the corner of Sherman Ave. and Northport Drive led to a chlorine spill Wednesday afternoon.

Engine 10 responded to the scene at 12:58 p.m. Due to the appearance of spilled chemicals underneath the truck, fire crews performed rapid extrication to get the truck driver to a safe place.

Firefighters investigated the vehicle and determined that the impact of the crash caused a lid to fly off the chlorine tank. The chemical truck also had two other tanks on board containing sulfuric and muriatic acids, respectively; however, those lids remained intact and no chemicals mixed as a result of the impact.

Engine 10’s crew hosed down the area to dilute the chlorine. They coordinated their efforts in accordance with the advice of the Madison Fire Department Hazardous Materials Team.

Traffic was diverted for about a half-hour with the help of the Madison Police Department. One driver sustained minor injuries as a result of the crash.

The intersection of Sherman and Northport is now open, and there is no danger to the public.
