Sprinkler Extinguishes Fire in 45-unit Apartment Building, No One Injured
Madison, WI 53717
Shortly after 10:00 pm on Tuesday, City of Madison Firefighters responded to a water flow alarm on the 7900 block of Tree Lane.
When Ladder 2 arrived, no smoke or flames were showing. The fire alarm was sounding and people were evacuating the 45-unit apartment complex.
Crews went to the second floor, where they saw light gray smoke coming from one of the apartments.
Ladder 2 requested an upgrade to a full fire response and MPD for crowd control. Inside the fire apartment, they discovered gray smoke but did not feel heat. Firefighters found a sprinkler had activated in one of the bedrooms.
Other crews assisted in ventilating the building and helped shut down the sprinkler system.
Damage estimate to two apartments is $25,000. Two families were displaced, which include 3 adults and 5 children.
Red Cross is assisting the families with temporary housing and other emergency needs.
The fire is under investigation.
A single sprinkler head prevented the fire from causing major damage or from spreading to other apartments.
