Fire Department

Firefighters were called to 449 State Street after a water heater began sparking and smoking.

Ladder Company 1, along with a full structure fire response, responded to Wasabi, where they were waved in by restaurant staff.

Upon entering the building, there was an immediate smell of electrical burning but no visible smoke. The occupants advised that they shut the breaker to the water heater off, and they escorted firefighters to the closet where it was located.

Ladder 1 removed an electrical cover from the water heater and determined the thermostat had shorted out, most likely due to the tank leaking water onto it. Firefighters checked in and around the thermostat and found no other issues.

Restaurant staff were advised to keep the breaker off and to contact a plumber for repairs.
