Narrative:

A smoke detector saved one household from greater harm when it provided early warning of a book smoldering atop the furnace downstairs.

One occupant woke up to the sound of the alarm. After discovering smoke in the basement, Engine Company 4 was summoned to investigate. Firefighters found a smoldering paper booklet smoldering on top of the furnace. Firefighters took the smoldering items outside and tossed snow on them.

Ladder Company 1 helped ventilate the building. No other areas or items were damaged in the basement furnace area. Engine Company 4 checked both apartments to ensure they were free of smoke. The furnace itself was working properly.
