Arrival:
Wednesday, December 13, 2017 - 6:38pm
Address:
2600 block University Ave.
Madison, WI 53703
Narrative:

Firefighters were called to a University Avenue apartment complex after smoke filled the hallways, triggering alarms.

Medic 10 was first on scene and reported no smoke or flames showing from the outside. As residents evacuated, Engine Company 4 entered to find light smoke in the hallway. Firefighters passed by a laundry room, and initially there were no heat signatures on thermal imaging cameras indicating a fire there. No machines were running at the time either.

Upon further investigation, firefighters found an overloaded washing machine jammed full of clothes and water. Residents reported heating a squealing noise coming from that area before alarms sounded.

Crews advised the property owner that the appliance would likely need to be serviced. By the time the issue was identified, the smoke had cleared up, and all occupants were able to return to their apartments.
