Overheated Elevator Motor Sends Firefighters To Apartment Complex
Madison, WI
Smoke that sent firefighters to an underground parking area at an east side apartment complex was traced to an elevator.
Engine Company 3 and other crews responded to the River’s Edge apartments following reports of smoke filling up the underground garage. Maintenance workers reported the elevator wasn’t working, and it was possible the smoke was coming from the elevator shaft. Engine Company 3 shut off the main power to the elevator and began to take a look, finding heavier smoke and an overheated motor on top of the elevator.
Ladder Company 1 helped ventilate the apartment building, as a haze of smoke had filled the first, second, and third floors. An elevator repair company was called to the building, and firefighters cleared upon confirmation there were no other hazards or concerns.
