Narrative:

The Madison Fire Department was dispatched to an apartment complex on the 1200 block of McKenna Boulevard for a fire alarm investigation. Ladder Co. 7 responded and began searching the 41-unit complex to identify the cause of the alarm.

Firefighters eventually located the apartment unit where a fire occurred. The fire was contained by an automatic sprinkler, and Ladder Co. 7 put a final stop to any remaining fire. During search and rescue operations, one person was found deceased inside the unit. There were no other occupants in the unit.

The fire forced the displacement of 23 apartments, affecting at least 27 people. The American Red Cross is providing assistance to those who have been displaced. Madison Metro provided a bus for temporary on-site shelter while occupants made alternate housing arrangements. Damages are currently estimated at $50,000.

The cause of the fire, and cause of death, are both under investigation. No further information is available at this time, pending updates from the Dane County Medical Examiner's Office.
