Address:
3100 Muir Field Rd.
Madison, WI
Update:

The Madison Fire Department's Fire Investigation Team has ruled this fire accidental as a result of improperly discarded smoking materials. The investigation found that cigarette butts had been discarded in a Terracotta planter pot on a balcony and eventually ignited. The fire in the pot extended to the building's siding and to other materials stored on the balcony. High winds and the items on the balcony contributed to the rapid fire spread.

The two cats that were missing after the fire, referenced in our earlier press release, were found safe and sound when occupants returned to their unit the next day to retrieve belongings.

Narrative:

Multiple calls were made to Dane County Dispatch just after 1pm on Saturday afternoon reporting a 24 unit apartment building on fire. Ladder 7 and Engine 7 were the first to arrive on scene finding heavy smoke and flames coming from the third floor and roof. Additional crews were immediately called in for assistance. In total, 12 companies, 2 medics and 2 reserve rigs were called to assist at the scene. After the first and second floors had been cleared of residents, crews went into a defensive attack from outside the building. Once the main body of the fire had been extinguished, heavy winds caused the fire to flare back up multiple times. After the third floor was searched, it was determined that the building was clear of residents and there were no injuries. A dog, a cat, two turtles and 4 bearded dragons were safely returned to their owners. 2 cats remain missing.

The building suffered major damage and is not habitable. All 70+ residents were displaced. Red Cross assisted residents and provided lodging at a local hotel. The Salvation Army provided snacks and beverages to crews and residents. Firefighters escorted residents from the first and second floors into the building to secure necessary items. It was determined unsafe to allow 3rd floor residents to retrieve any belongings, but firefighters were able to retrieve some necessary items for residents.
Damages have been estimated to be approximately $750,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
