Per MFD fire investigators, the cause of the fire has been determined to be the use of rags used for staining. Following use, the rags were not stored properly, leading to spontaneous combustion that then ignited nearby common combustibles.

A west side resident grabbed his fire extinguisher after a neighbor informed him that his garage was on fire. Medic 2 assisted Ladder 2 in responding to the call when firefighters learned that the fire may be spreading. Medic 2 used a water to put out the fire, and crews proceeded with salvage and overhaul operations, which included removing any dry wall that was damaged by the fire.
