East side firefighters responded to the 200 block of Waubesa Street overnight after neighbors reported a couch on fire on a nearby porch.

Engine Company 3 and Medic 5 entered the three-season porch to find a futon smoking, but the flames neighbors initially saw had diminished. Firefighters moved the futon onto the sidewalk and used a water can extinguisher to cool down the cushions. Crews confirmed that no fire extended beyond the futon and into the house.

A couple of ashtrays, some empty beer, and vodka containers were found nearby, but nobody was home at the time. Engine Company 3 thanked the neighbors for calling 911, allowing them to put a stop to the situation before it had a chance to grow into something more severe.
