Man Rescued From Lake Monona After Wandering Onto Thin Ice

The Madison Fire Department’s Lake Rescue Team, along with Ladder Company 6 and Medic 6, were sent to the shores of Lake Monona following reports of a man wandering onto the thin ice. According to witnesses, the man was walking northward, from the Olin Park area toward downtown Madison—and toward open water.
While en route, crews were advised the man appeared to be taking off his clothes and lying down onto the ice. The Lake Rescue Team could see the man as they approached Olin Park from John Nolen Drive. While launching their airboat, Lake Rescue observed the man slip off the ice and into the water.
The Lake Rescue Team proceeded toward the man’s location, breaking through ice along the way, and quickly pulled him from the frigid lake. He was in the water for four minutes.
Lake Rescue returned the man to shore, where paramedics were standing by to provide dry blankets, heat packs, and emergency medical care. The man was hypothermic but his condition improved greatly while in transit to a local hospital.
