Address:
Lake Monona
Madison, WI
Narrative:

The Monona Fire Department called for assistance from the Madison Fire Department’s Lake Rescue Team early this morning for a boat on fire in Lake Monona.

The fire was located about 75 years off of Schluter Park in Monona. At one point, flames were said to be about 20 feet high, according to Monona Fire. Lake Rescue 1 launched at Olin Park and proceeded toward the reported whereabouts of the fire. The team found a green plastic kayak still floating though it was burned and melted.

The tip of the kayak was still burning when firefighters arrived. The Lake Rescue Team put out the remaining fire and loaded the kayak onto its boat.

Concerned there may be a missing kayaker in the vicinity, the Team used lights, radar, sonar, and infrared detectors to search the immediate area, finding no other debris or anything that would suggest the need for underwater search operations.

The Madison Lake Rescue Team dropped off the melted boat at Schluter Park so Monona Fire could begin its investigation.
