Address:
300 block N. Brooks St.
Madison, WI
Narrative:

A fire in the third-floor kitchen area of Porchlight Community Housing did an estimated $15,000-$20,000 worth of damage Wednesday.

Engine 4 arrived just after 1:00 p.m. and were told by Porchlight staff there’d been a fire on top of the stove.

Although staff used an extinguisher to kill the stovetop flames before closing the kitchen door and evacuating the building, firefighters were met with black smoke when they arrived at the kitchen. They entered to find the cabinets above the stove still on fire.

Engine 4’s crew quickly knocked down the fire in the cabinets and began ventilating the building with the help of Ladder 1. After examining surrounding areas for fire extension, officers and investigators interviewed occupants and witnesses.

Fire investigators determined the fire was caused by unattended cooking. Damage is limited to nearby cabinets, countertops, and light fixtures directly above the stove.

Nobody was injured during the incident.
