Narrative:

The Madison Fire Department Hazardous Incident Team (HIT) was called to assist the De Forest Fire Department early Friday morning following a chemical spill.

At 1:32 a.m., an employee at Waltco Package Delivery Service in De Forest called 911 reporting his co-worker was exposed to some sort of gas.

The HIT was called over at approximately at 2:15 a.m. after it was determined that muriatic acid was leaking from the back of a delivery truck behind the warehouse. An estimated three gallons of liquid leaked onto the floor of the truck and the ground outside. It’s unknown how the spill occurred.

The HazMat team, suited in full protective gear, entered the back of the truck, removed the damaged containers, and placed them in an over-pack drum. De Forest firefighters and the MFD HIT flushed the back of the truck and the affected area outside with water until the scene was clear of health and safety hazards.

One person was transported to UW Hospital for evaluation but was released right away. Crews cleared the scene at approximately 4:45 a.m.
