Narrative:

The Madison Fire Department responded to 166 S. Fair Oaks Avenue for a fire reported inside Madison Kipp Corporation.

Staff evacuated the building as Engine Co. 3 and other east side and downtown fire crews arrived on scene. Firefighters were directed to a 55-gallon bin inside the building that is used to collect metal shavings. Fire was contained inside the bin with flames shooting toward a vent hood above.

Kipp Corporation maintenance staff assisted firefighters by shutting down electrical power to the vent hood and other mechanisms surrounding the bin. MGE also responded.

Ladder Co. 1 pried open the front of the bin and removed some filters that were at risk of catching on fire. Engine Co. 3 applied water to the fire and achieved knockdown at 7:47 a.m.

Crews confirmed fire did not extend beyond the vent hood, and there were no injuries resulting from this incident. Several overhead garage doors were opened to help clear smoke from the building.

The Madison Fire Department’s Fire Investigation Team determined the fire was accidental. Damage is estimated at $150,000.
