Arrival:
Thursday, February 8, 2018 - 12:40pm
Address:
4800 block Hermsmeier Lane
Madison, WI
Narrative:

Engine Company 5 responded to the 4800 block of Hermsmeier Lane after a gas line was ruptured during digging operations there.

Firefighters took note of wind speed and direction and staged approximately 200 feet upwind from the site of the leak before approaching on foot. MGE advised they were also en route.

With the hiss of natural gas audible from a nearby distance, firefighters advised construction workers to move farther back in case the gas found an ignition source. Engine 5 assisted a neighbor who was concerned about gas possibly leaking into their home, and using an air monitor, firefighters assured the neighbor there was no gas in the home.

Firefighters continued to monitor the gas levels in the area. MGE arrived and pinched off the gas pipe, mitigating the hazard.
