Arrival:
Thursday, December 8, 2016 - 4:35pm
Address:
4100 block Nakoosa Trail
Madison, WI
Narrative:

A Walmart employee noticed a strong smell of gasoline near the service desk Thursday afternoon. Concerned about a possible leak or spill somewhere, she dialed 911 to have the Madison Fire Department look into it.

Engine Company 8 responded to the east-side store on Nakoosa Trail. As they approached the Customer Service area, they were immediately met by a man who had an explanation right up his sleeve.

“The gas smell is from me,” he said with arm outstretched.

He told firefighters he was awaiting service at the counter when the Wal-Mart employee reported the gasoline odor to 911. He tried to grab her attention before the Fire Department was notified but his attempts were unsuccessful.

Now with the crew in front of him, he was able to explain that he spilled gasoline on his shirt sleeve while filling up his car. Engine 8 confirmed the smell seemed to originate from his sleeve. They also used their air monitor to check the Customer Service area, finding no carbon monoxide, natural gas, or oxygen displacement. Store employees also confirmed the smell dissipated in the short time since they called 911.

Employees' concerns were quickly put to rest, and the customer was free to carry on with his shopping—perhaps for a bottle of laundry detergent.
